Confuzzling Puzzles...

Post by Edrial »

*Edrial walks in and takes a seat at the bar, and starts speaking to no one in particular*
Anyone have any ideas why someone would suddenly forget how to perform certain skills while at the same time becoming more proficient in others with out practice? and why I as a normal sized human seem to have the muscle mass to swing a maul properly? I have completely forgotten how to soothsay, search a room properly, perform tasks with traps, and even how to read and write common. Which buy the way if there is anyone who can mentor me in common again I would appreciate. My friends have already tried a more lax teaching schedule and I just can't seem to pick it up again. I have gotten stronger, tougher, and heal much faster than I did before, and can even wield a maul properly as I said. I have no explanation for it and it is kind of freaking me out...

Flamyras stops mid-sip at Edrial's words. He sets down his drink and turns towards him. "You wouldn't have happened to have witnessed a sudden, inexplicable fire in a place not natural, would you? Perhaps on another plane?" He shifts to sit next to him, a serious expression worn.

Not that I am aware of. Biggest fire I saw was the one in the witchwood when willow set a huge chunk of it on fire. The change happened to me a moon or two after that as well, it didn't happen then.

Flamyras sighs and scratches his head. "Well damn, guess that rules that out. Hrmm..." He whispers quietly, "You haven't been to Spring recently, have you?" He glances around, trying to keep that one down.

*shakes his head* I was only to the fae realm for a very brief time, and that was after this had started happening already. I was only there for about 2 minutes as well, it was during the nightmare attacks. I apparently do have fae blood that runs in my veins though. Would that have something to do with this?

"HAH!" Olaf slams Edrial on the back with a congradulatory thump.

"Why look gift hog in mouth? You get muscles, which you need. You lose reading, which is pointless. You MUCH better off, now!"

Laughing at Olaf's constant mirth, "Ah, a gift it may be, but wouldn't you want to know the why? Maybe get it for yourself and keep it from our mages? But Edrial, I have no idea why it has happened to you. A number of months ago, I witnessed a massive fire in Spring and when I came back to Midway... well, I had difficulty reading and botched quite a few attempts to treat wounds, but I found myself feeling stronger as well. It went away after a moon or two, but..."
He sighs and drinks some more.

*nods to flamyras* I see, well I didn't witness that event, and this has lasted for five or six moons now, so it is beginning to worry me.
*looks to olaf* Normally I wouldn't worry about it, but what if I lose other skills and gain others at a more dangerous time. Like forgetting how to use my sword and shield in the middle of a fight, or the ability to use the maul I have while I am using it. While reading may be pointless, I like not being at a disadvantage, and people not knowing that I can read can give you an advantage, thusly putting THEM at the disadvantage. I like that a lot. So I want to pick it back up again.

Olaf cups his chin in deep thought - but only for a second.

"Olaf never ask enemy if he can read before he crush his head... Idea never cross mind. Olaf see no advantage there to anybody whether he could or couldn't."

"So Olaf say: Stop thinking so much and start swinging. Swing maul enough times and you never forget. Become like arm - as easy to plant maul in face as is to plant fist."

"There! Settled. No more wondering - just fighting!"

I have to admit, I see no flaw in the argument other than my current problem of randomly forgetting things. Things that were as natural to me as swinging a maul is to you. If I can find whatever the cause of my current problem is, I will take your advice to heart. Until then I think I will temper the advice with curiosity to what is wrong with me.

Flamyras downs his ale and turns to watch the bar, lost in thought. "What could be causing this... what was the last thing you recall before you started experiencing these lapses in memory? Anything funny you ate or had done to you?"

*Edrial ponders for a few moments*
Nothing that I can recall. The odd thing is that I don't have memory lapses per se. I can remember performing these skills before, I just don't recall how to do them anymore. It is like one day my skill level was reset to what it was prior to having learned the skills. I can go through the motions of performing the skills but they are meaningless to me and it is more like doing something you have witnessed someone else doing.

"Have you been to Splitskull, Edrial? The changes I've heard of upon reaching and communing with that place are generally more drastic than the ones you describe, but still much in line with what has happened to you."
