9
Before the First Breaking, before the lands were torn,
When the races overwhelmed nature, and famine descended,
The Great Tunnels were dreamt and then made real.
In the city of stone and parks, their descendants remain.
In battles and Wars they have hid, yet they too will soon wane,
Unless they guard secret Rings both old and new.
Darkness will visit their cousins and too few shall learn,
For the coming War will need more Lights.

Please discuss below.

The Great Tunnels were dreamt and then made real.
I have heard of people who travel through dreams as if they were traveling in reality, and when they wake up, they are at their destination.

Here I go with the instincts again.

Does this have to do with the fact there are so few essence magi?

I mean they are the ones I know of for certain that can move through the "Dreamscape" as it were.

Strider was an essence magi and he could move around and new a lot about the dreamscape.

I'm thinking that this means when the war is upon us the essence magi will be in fewer number then they were before.

I'm thinkin' the "Great Tunnels" would be the Ways. I hear they were built by essence mages so they travel quickly between certain places, or something like that. Of course they're dangerous, but mages don't worry 'bout that so much.

But that doesn't explain the "city of stone and parks"...

sigh

I have to say I think this refers to the high elves. They live in a stone city within the great forest do they not. Sylvandar is a stone city built within a forest. They are also well known for not getting involved in many wars....they tend to hide in there woods and pretend the problems will pass them by. The elves are also known for there great magical powers and it would only make sense that some of the great elven mages created the pathways...which yes I have traveled before, and I do know how to enter and to some extent control. Many Essence mages learn the ways of the dreaming but it is a seperate skill...it is just one that many who follow essence learn. Just as many who learn to use magic, learn elementalism. however, it is possible to learn the skills of elementalism, without being a mage.

My 2 nick,
TEE

I could be way off but our stories told to us in childhood tell of the High Elves being descendants of the Light Fey, could they be what this Stanza speaks of?

*Twilight looks up from the papers in front of her, a look of revelation upon her ghostly pale features*

... could be ...

"In the city of stone and parks, their descendants remain." This line probably does refer to the high elves but then they(the High Elves) are the descendants of whomerver this stanza is refering to. And keep in mind, light is capitalized. Light Fey would be a good conjecture.

The topic of the Rings referred to has not yet been mentioned... It seems that the survival of the race mentioned here, probably the Elves, is dependent on keeping control of Rings. Has anyone heard of such Rings?

I believe The Rings are referenced in the Chronicle of the Essence Wars, on Stones 3 and 9. Like the women who dance in a ring just outside of Greengrove, the Rings are the Essence Centers.

"Greengrove....Twilight, thee do not know me well, but if thee ever have the time or inclination, would thee be willing to speak with a young pup about such things? I am woefully ignorant..."

Raven's eyes seem far away and confused. There is also a subtle need in their depths.

*Twilight smiles at Raven*

Of course, anything for a ... sister.

*Twilight places a few pieces of parchment in front of Raven (i.e., see the post under 'Depictions of the Prophecy' titled, 'The Chronicle of the Essence War')*

This is what I have of the Chronicle of the Essence Wars. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Raven smiles shyly.

"I am grateful, Winter Twilight. I know so little of my...kin. Or myself for that matter. Any aid would be most appreciated. It is...lonely sometimes."

*Twilight smiles sad and reminiscent as she whispers*

I know what you mean.

Raven lowers her head and tentatively reaches out a hand to Winter's shoulder for a moment, almost reverently. If Winter allows, she stays there silently for awhile, introspective.
